“I’d love to door-knock GPs and tell them about this life-changing medicine”

Sophie Gamwell on the podcast

On this month’s episode of What's Your Why, Hannah and Mike welcome Sophie Gamwell, a former nurse who spent five years working in leadership positions at one of the UK’s first cannabis clinics.

Sophie started her professional career on the front-line of healthcare, training to be a nurse in her home country of Australia. After taking a break from the chaos of the emergency and intensive care, her career took a very different turn when she got a place studying international business in New York.

She went onto work in operations for numerous tech start-ups across Melbourne, London and New York – so when an opportunity came up to join the nascent medical cannabis industry, it seemed like the perfect synergy of her skillset.

Sophie was one of the first employees at Lyphe Group, one of the pioneers in the UK industry, ending her five year tenure as Managing Director. The patient-centred approach instilled from her nursing background has remained at her core throughout her career.

She’s now focusing on helping other cannabis companies overcome the many operational obstacles that still exist within the industry to ensure this life changing medicine is accessible and affordable for all patients.

As well as delving into her career, Sophie discusses her initial apprehension around medical cannabis, having seen some of the negative side effects on patients in A&E and how this changed as she began to hear the success stories.

“I was apprehensive about cannabis as a medicine because I had seen what the street stuff had done to some people.
But then, on the other hand, I've also seen what morphine has done to people. If you have too much morphine you stop breathing…but GPs happily prescribe a form of morphine for certain conditions.
“I’d love to door-knock GPs with resources that show all the success stories and how this medicine changes lives.”

Sophie also talks about the importance of collaboration in the industry and the need to work together to spread wider awareness, adding: “By collaborating, putting our heads together and working smartly, I think we can achieve a lot.”
